Barge Fleet Profile and Barge Commodity Profile Reports 2020
Barge Fleet Profile Report 2020
Author: Ken Eriksen | Number of pages: 31 | PDF and Hard-Copy Report
This continuing study, now in its 33rd year of distribution, identifies the line haul, commodity-carrying fleet of inland barges operating on the Mississippi River System, its connecting waterways and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The scope of the study does not include any rivers or canals flowing into the Pacific or the Atlantic Oceans.
Data and information are gathered primarily through an annual survey of operators, but also from personal contacts, use of available Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and Coast Guard statistics, company internet websites and reference to historic research materials. For purposes of the Barge Fleet Profile, all tank barges except double hull barges are counted as single hull. Operators are to include information for equipment they operate as of December 31 2019.
Who is included? Operators actively engaged in the movement of cargo including both carriers for hire and private carriers. IHS Markit does not survey owners of record nor lessors because of the probability of duplication. The survey also attempts to verify those barges that are cross-chartered between carriers in a further effort to avoid double counting. Operators of chartered equipment list those barges with their active fleet.
Barge Commodity Profile Report 2020
Author: Ken Eriksen | Number of pages: 42 | PDF and Hard-Copy Report
This report summarizes movements of commodities and products on the inland river system by type of barge while using pressure indices on the available barge fleet to assess the supply of barges relative to the demand for barges. The US inland river system comprises the navigable areas of the Upper and Lower Mississippi River, and Ohio River Systems. The data and information in this report was compiled from the Army Corps of Engineers Waterborne Commerce of the United States and IHS Markit's IEG Vantage annual Barge Fleet Profile report. The Corps data is through 2017 while the barge fleet data is through 2019. The Corps has not released the internal waterborne commerce data for 2018, and the 2019 data is still being compiled. So, commodity data for 2018 and 2019 are IEG Vantage estimates. Once the Corps releases the 2018 data, IEG Vantage will send an updated report.
