Challenge
A major oil company with E&P activity in Latin American wanted to understand how it compared to other companies operating in the country. The company wanted to determine an optimal E&P strategy based on the best plays, fields and operators.
Solution
Using IHS Markit databases and geological, commercial and regulatory expertise, we characterized current activity trends and benchmarked the client's success relative to the competition. We ranked basins and plays according to activity, success factors, potential yet to find, as well as commercial, political and regulatory above-ground risks. Based on this data and analysis, we developed a number of strategic options.
Results
The client shifted in-country focus from one basin to another and identified a number of new exploration blocks for acquisition or farm-in.

Challenge
The client asked Energy Consulting to help evaluate unconventional gas potential in a target country.
Solution
Energy Consulting delivered an overview of global industry unconventional trends by characterizing major North American unconventional plays by geology, production yield and principal technologies used. We determined key drivers and business requirements using the North American play evolution (case studies, key player identification, success/failure factors, unit costs and economics). We gave a high-level assessment of the target country's unconventional resource potential based on publication research, service industry capabilities and activity. Finally, we provided gap analysis by describing client capabilities compared to the identified skills and resources needed to succeed.
Results
The client used the study to move forward with unconventional development in the country, addressing plays with the highest potential, learning from North American case histories and addressing organizational shortcomings.
