Experts

Christopher Elsner

Mr. Elsner focuses on the impact of financial markets on oil prices, North American oil and gas markets, as well as oil markets and geopolitical risk in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region. Formerly a member of the Financial Services team, he provided market research and analysis to large financial institutions, primarily hedge funds, private equity, and investment banks. Before arriving at IHS Markit, Mr. Elsner had worked for the U.S. Department of Energy and the Energy Information Administration (EIA) as an International Energy Analyst. In this function, he concentrated on bilateral engagements with foreign governments, mainly from the Middle East and Central Asia. As an analyst at EIA, he covered both North America and the MENA region, providing analysis to other U.S. federal agencies, and forecasting production from the main producers in the region. Mr. Elsner earned a BA from Kenyon College, an MA from Johns Hopkins SAIS, and an MBA from HEC Paris.

William Fleeson

Previously, Mr. Fleeson was an energy journalist for Argus Media, covering renewable markets and energy policy.Educated in the United States, Mr. Fleeson holds a bachelor's degree from Belmont University and master's degrees from Columbia University and Georgetown University, where he earned an honor's concentration in international business and Russian and East European studies.

Roger Diwan

Mr. Diwan has more than 25 years of experience in advising governments, oil and gas companies, and financial institutions on oil markets, geopolitics of oil, and assessment of the strategic shifts of the global oil and gas industry. He leads a team of analysts and strategists to advise asset managers, hedge funds, private equity firms, and investment banks by providing customized analysis on the oil and gas industry. Recently, Mr. Diwan has been focusing on strategies that investors are implementing to capture value in the energy sector and the implications of the decapitalization of the oil and gas sector and capitalization of the energy transition. He still leads analysis on topics as varied as the global exploration outlook, the geopolitical impact of US shales, China's energy outlook, or the changing strategies of the Gulf national oil companies. Mr. Diwan holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Sorbonne University, France, and master's degrees from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, United States, and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris, France.

Karim Fawaz

Mr. Fawaz is a Director in the Energy and Natural Resources group at IHS Markit. He leads the Energy Advisory Service, which provides energy research tailored to financial institutions investing in the energy and commodity space. He has extensive expertise analyzing short-term global crude oil and refined product markets, managing IHS Markit's global short-term liquids supply/demand balances, and forecasting short-term trends in global oil fundamentals, prices, differentials, and refining margins. He also specializes in the relationship between physical and paper commodity markets. Mr. Fawaz has also led various consulting engagements across the midstream and downstream value chain, including asset acquisition due diligence projects, global crude and product trade flow modeling, and pricing analyses. Prior to joining IHS Markit in 2013, Mr. Fawaz worked in the Financial Advisory practice at PFC Energy. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the American University of Beirut and an MA from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies

Laurent Ruseckas

Laurent Ruseckas is a leading authority on the gas industry in Europe and Eurasia, with a special focus on gas supply and transportation and a regional focus on the Caspian Sea region, southeastern Europe, Turkey, Ukraine and the Eastern Mediterranean. He has published client research on topics including EU gas regulation, Russian-Ukrainian gas arbitration, and the gas sectors in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. He has worked for more than two decades advising international oil and gas companies and institutional investors on energy investment in Eurasia, and has led assignments in which IHS Markit served as Lenders' Market Consultant in support of project financings on numerous occasions. Ruseckas first joined CERA (a predecessor company of IHS Markit) in 1991 and led CERA's Caspian Energy practice from 1997 to 2003. Ruseckas co-managed the Caspian Development Corporation project carried out for the World Bank and European Commission (DG Energy) during the period 2009-2011. From 2006 to 2008, Ruseckas was based in Baku, Azerbaijan as Director of Business Development and head of strategy for a company in the oil transportation sector. A Russian speaker, Ruseckas holds a B.A. with honors in Russian and Soviet Studies from Harvard University (Cambridge, USA), and he passed comprehensive examinations in the Ph.D. program in Political Science at Columbia University (New York, USA).

Chad Singleton

Chad Singleton is an associate director for IHS Markit's Financial & Capital Markets practice, specializing in gas, power, and renewables. Chad has over 10 years of experience in north america power fundamentals and has served as both a regional lead covering the western interconnect as well as a topical lead covering clean resource adequacy, flexibility, resiliency, grid modernization, and asset valuations. He has authored whitepapers and presentations contextualizing the role of power and renewables in the 4th industrial revolution as well as external business environment influences on the sector. Chad has developed numerous proprietary models and tools concerning project economics, net cost analysis, nodal pricing, energy scarcity pricing, flexible resource adequacy, REC price forecasting, and RPS compliance. Chad holds a BBA in Business Economics from the University of North Texas.

Aaron Brady

Mr. Brady joined IHS Markit in 2004 and has more than two decades of experience in energy markets. He is responsible for developing and coordinating IHS Markit's long-term global oil market outlook and deeper dives on the North American oil market. His expertise covers industry dynamics, global and regional oil supply and demand trends, oil trade and infrastructure developments.Mr. Brady has authored numerous IHS Markit reports covering vital topics, such as the role of key pipeline projects, US crude oil exports, biofuels, the economics of electric vehicles, peak oil demand in the developed world, along with many regular market briefings and World Oil Watch reports. He regularly briefs clients on IHS Markit energy outlooks and has been a regular presenter at the annual CERA Week conference in Houston. He has been quoted in numerous media outlets including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Bloomberg, among others.Previously, he was a consultant in the oil industry, focusing on downstream regulatory issues. Mr. Brady's university degrees include a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College, United States, and a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Xizhou Zhou

Mr. Zhou has expertise in power and renewable market fundamentals analysis and forecasting, power market design and policy analysis, renewable energy business models, and company strategies, among other areas. He previously headed the firm's Power, Gas, Coal, and Renewables practice in Asia Pacific while based in Beijing, where he significantly expanded the group's research and consulting coverage across the region with new teams established in Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Delhi, Penang, and Brisbane. Mr. Zhou began his career at IHS Markit through one of its predecessor companies, Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), as part of its Emerging Markets and Global Power groups in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Before that, he worked as a consultant on regulatory economics for Industrial Economics, Inc. in Boston and as a research analyst at the World Resources Institute in Washington, DC. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese and proficient in Spanish, Mr. Zhou holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Environmental Management, both from Yale University in the United States. He serves as an editorial board member of China Petroleum Society's official journal, Guoji Shiyou Jingji (International Petroleum Economics). He is currently based in Washington, DC.

Eduard Sala de Vedruna

Mr. Sala de Vedruna and his team deliver competitive strategy and market analysis to developers, utilities, and renewables equipment manufacturers on key trends and market opportunities. Paul McConnell

Mr. McConnell is an Executive Director with the Energy and Climate Scenarios team at IHS Markit. His work covers energy and carbon markets, long-term decarbonisation trends, climate policy, and strategic responses to climate change and the energy transition. He is highly experienced in both development of energy and climate scenarios, as well as their application in assessing climate-related risk and opportunity for organisations across the oil & gas, power, industry and financial sectors. Prior to IHS Markit, Mr. McConnell led the climate transition risk team for a leading global sustainability consultancy. He also has many years' experience working in research roles across the energy industry. Mr. McConnell holds an MSc in Global Environmental Change and International Policy from Imperial College, London.
