Wade Shafer, Director, IHS Markit, covers western North American power markets. Based in Washington, D.C., Mr. Shafer analyzes power market fundamentals and follows policy, technology, and generation trends. His work on power supply and economy-wide decarbonization strategies informs resource and strategic planning at leading utilities, power infrastructure developers, and energy companies. He has evaluated renewable generation portfolios that meet hourly electricity demand requirements, resource adequacy issues in low carbon power supply portfolios, hydrogen for seasonal energy storage, and the implications of electric vehicles for the power grid. Through written reports and presentations, Mr. Shafer supports all levels of organizations, including corporate executives and directors. In addition to advising energy companies, he has briefed automotive executives on the implications of electric vehicles for the power grid.
Alongside ongoing energy transition research, Mr. Shafer evaluates current western North American power market issues. He monitors state and provincial policy in the western United States and Canada, evaluates resource adequacy issues in the western United States, and follows wholesale power market conditions in Alberta and California.
Mr. Shafer earned an MS from Johns Hopkins University and a BS from The George Washington University.
