David is a senior director at IHS Markit's Coal Service. He has effectively been with IHS Markit since 1988.
Mr.Price started work at Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd in London in the mid-1970s, as a statistical assistant. He was there to 1988, rising to become a senior market analyst of the dry bulk trades at the company. He also took his degree at this time, achieving a BSc Hons in Geography at Birkbeck College, University of London.
In 1988 he moved to become the manager of the International Coal Trade Service at WEFA Ltd, now a part of IHS Markit. This was effectively a start-up role, re-establishing a service that had become moribund. During his time there he was the author of major multi-client studies of the international coal markets, environmental policy around the world and the freight sector. In addition, he undertook consultancy work for major clients, including the EU and Exxon.
He moved in 1991 to McCloskey Coal Information Service Ltd to work with managing director Gerard McCloskey on the company's consultancy business, but was rapidly drawn into news reporting, becoming the editor of Coal UK in February 1992. In 1996, he renewed his analytical work by becoming editor of Steam Coal Forecaster, now a part of the IHS Markit Coal Service.
As the McCloskey Group grew, particularly from 2000 onwards, David took responsibility for building the group's conference division and later held responsibility for sales and marketing.
Following the company's acquisition by IHS Markit at the end of 2008, David took the lead on coal insight during the development of the group's global energy scenarios. He has also undertaken consultancy work and made presentations for the group.
David has been the author of, and lead editor of, many special reports while he has also spoken at conferences and conducted investor briefings around the world.
In 2010, David took responsibility for the launch of IHS Markit's Global Steam Coal Advisory Service, now a major part of the Coal Service, as a part of IHS Markit's Gas, Power and Energy Futures team. A part of its Coal, Mines and Minerals team, this is now one of IHS Markit's flagship services, with clients around the world. David also continues to do consultancy work and to speak at events around the world.
