Executive Director – Strategic Assessments, Jane’s by IHS MarkitMr. Tate Nurkin is the executive director of the Strategic Assessments and Futures Studies (SAFS) Centre with Jane's by IHS Markit.
Mr. Nurkin specializes in horizon scanning, scenario planning, wargaming, red teaming and competitive net assessments for defense community organizations. His research focuses on the future of defense technology innovation, diffusion and development, military capabilities and defense industrial bases. He is a frequent commentator on China's military modernization and Western Pacific and Middle East security and defense dynamics, regional procurements and military capabilities. His work is frequently published in Jane's Defence Weekly, Jane's Intelligence Review, Jane's Navy International, Jane's blog and third party publications, such as HDIAC Journal, CIO Applications, Deutsche Welle, CNN, Monsch, and The National (UAE). He is also a frequent speaker at public forums and conferences. He has provided public testimony to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, an advisory body to the U.S. Congress. He is a member of the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Future Council on International Security, focused on assessing the connections of emerging technologies and defense and security issues. Previously, he was a member of the WEF's Global Agenda Council on Nuclear Security from July 2014 to June 2016. He was the lead author of the Council's "Future of Nuclear Security," whitepaper published by the WEF in April 2016. Since 2015, Tate has served as a guest lecturer with the Eisenhower School's Long Term Strategy Program at the U.S. National Defense University. The program is focused on assessing links between national defense industrial bases and broader strategic competitions, especially in Asia. He has both delivered lectures and designed and delivered table top exercises to support the program. Mr. Nurkin joined Jane's Information Groups in March of 2006, now part of IHS Markit. Previously, he worked for the Modelling, Simulation, Wargaming and Analysis Group of Booz Allen Hamilton; the Strategic Assessment Centre of SAIC; and Joint Management Services, a defense consulting firm. He holds Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Duke University, US, and a Master of Science in International Affairs from the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology, US.
