Alex Barnes, a senior analyst at IHS Markit, focuses on violent, political and regulatory risk in Afghanistan, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand.
Mr. Barnes contributes to Jane’s Defence Weekly and Jane’s Intelligence Review on issues such as the Afghan peace process, security threats to Kabul City, and counter-terrorism capability in the Philippines. He has given media interviews with TRT World and the BBC. He joined IHS Markit in 2016. Previously, Mr. Barnes worked at the Australian Department of Defence as a strategic analyst. He deployed to support Australian military operations in Afghanistan in 2013, 2014, and 2015. In his current position at IHS Markit, he has briefed NATO, the UK Cabinet Office and private sector clients on the security risks in Afghanistan. Mr. Barnes holds a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in international relations from the Australian National University, Australia, and Master of Science in conflict studies with Distinction from the London School of Economics, United Kingdom. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in international development at the University of Oxford, where his research interests include international development, conflict resolution, insurgency, business and politics.
