Acrylonitrile in the New Decade: A Delicate Balance

The acrylonitrile market is at risk of being in shortage as capacity additions have failed to keep up with demand growth. HIS Markit has forecast at the 2018 conference that acrylonitrile capacity has already caught up with demand and that it had become a sellers’ market. This was very much in evidence this year - market tightness and some physical shortage of supply had developed from production problems to date in 2019.
Modest new capacity is starting up in China this year and next. Asahi Kasei and INEOS Nitriles have both indicated that they will add capacity, but this will not be available until about 2025. The industry must invest and fast.
