When lockdowns were imposed around the world earlier this year to stop the spread of COVID-19, economic activity was severely curtailed. As a result, the world was plunged into the deepest recession since World War II. Since chemicals are the building blocks of consumer goods or enablers for their manufacture, the global chemical industry has been negatively impacted. This presentation examines how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the global chemical industry and, in particular, how key market fundamentals (demand, capacity, pricing, margins) have changed in the face of a global economic recession and lower crude oil prices. It presents an outlook of the global economy and a trajectory that the chemical industry will likely follow, taking into account the effects of the overbuilding that began in 2019. It also discusses how long-term trends will shape the global chemical and refining industries in the 2020s. These trends include global mega trends, sustainability, energy transition, and developments in mainland China's Chemical industry.

The Asian acetic acid and its derivatives were each impacted to varying degrees by the pandemic. While the acetate esters and VAM markets suffered from weak demand caused by the pandemic, the acetic anhydride market performed strong with healthy demand. Supported by tight supply, the price of the Asian acetic acid also remained relatively high despite the pandemic. With the focus now on recovery, how do we expect the market to behave in the coming months? Will each of these derivatives experience similar recovery trends? What are the other factors influencing their recoveries? This presentation will provide updates on each of these markets and discuss these key questions.

- When will the Global Recovery Begin for PX and PTA?
Duncan Clark, Vice President, Aromatics & Fibres, IHS Markit
The paraxylene and PTA industries are currently experiencing significant excess global capacity, which has largely been created due to new massive paraxylene plants being built in China over the last two years and further expansions of PTA capacity by Chinese producers. The clear market oversupply has been exacerbated by the impact on demand caused by COVID19, which has crashed polyester market growth to its lowest level since 2008. Margins within the paraxylene and PTA businesses have collapsed, leading to financial hardship for many producers globally and utilization rates have been pulled lower to minimize profit losses. Exporters of paraxylene to China have been particularly badly affected and some are considering the long term health of the industry. More paraxylene and PTA capacity is being planned in China, which will worsen market conditions for the next few years, posing the question, "when will the global recovery begin for PX and PTA?" The presentation will discuss the current market dynamics, including structural changes occurring in the major Chinese market and its implications for the rest of the world's suppliers and shed light on what is needed for the recovery to start taking place.
