SID Display week is the premier showcase for global information display companies and researchers to unveil cutting-edge developments in display technology. More display innovations are introduced year after year at Display Week than at any other display event in the world.

This is the first edition of the Flexible Displays Market Focus event. Unlike most events related to “printed”, “plastic” or “flexible” electronics, this event will specifically consider market opportunities for display devices on flexible substrates.

Numerous conferences for the past decade or more have covered the topic of flexible displays – but in recent years, these events have become less and less focused on displays, and more and more focused on other electronics devices that benefit from flexible substrate technologies. In part this is due to the complexity of display technologies, but it's also because flexible displays are not particularly meaningful without accompanying devices also being flexible.

This is the first event that IHS Markit has produced about flexible displays. This event is specifically focused on flexible displays – with an eye to identifying if the technology has advanced adequately to serve markets that require flexible display devices.

The 4 sessions in the conference examine real market opportunities for flexible displays:

  • Flexible Displays:  Market Analysis
While the notion of flexible displays is appealing, there are no obvious applications that demand display devices that are actually flexible.  In the past decade, we've seen many prototypes, but we still are waiting to identify just where the market is likely to grow.  This session will consider the various development efforts and attempt to identify relevant market opportunities.
  • Large Area Flexible Displays
Several companies are working on large-area flexible displays for applications in the living room, digital advertising, possible desktop solutions, and large-scale visualization.  This session considers some of the leading opportunities for large-scale displays that are constructed on a flexible substrate.
  • Flexible Displays: Portable and Wearable Devices
Small-size applications appear to be a great opportunity for flexible displays.  Putting a large-area display into a small package requires some level of flexibility.  Moreover the fast-growing segment related to wearable devices, (including watches, rings, bracelets, etc.), by definition require displays with some level of conformability or flexibility.  This session features speakers that are engaged with development efforts for small and medium-sized flexible displays.
  • Novel Solutions using Flexible Displays: The Search for the Killer App
Even considering large area and small/medium market segments, it's not easy to identify applications that truly demand flexibility.  This session looks at several novel segments that might prove to be a "killer app" for displays that are flexible.
